Our Sport Comp Night was held in a “new” venue due to the Studio under renovation. We were so glad that our former member, Victor Bautista , who has been involved part-time professionally in corporate photography, was our special guest judge for this evening competition.

Before the start of the competition, Ali and John led us having discussion on some business, esp. regarding the 30th anniversary of our club. 36 members and guest joined this evening, which proved to be good comp night. Especially thanks our member, Dhiraj, helped holding the photos for judging.

Club Night 7/5/2012

Before the feature “Wildlife Presentation”, EGM regarding two motions was held. The result was to delay after discussion and by show of hands from the present of members.

Then we had Henrik Olesen presented his work on “Wildlife Photography”. The audience were entertained by his interest, rules, gears of the wildlife photography he has been engaging.

Besides the above agenda, we also watched a short video titled “Stunning Time-Lapse Portrait of Portland Created with 300,000+ Photos” (searched by yourself if interested), suggested by member S.H. Ha, who challenged if our club could do similar for HK. This was followed immediately by photo presentations from members Andrew, Bing, Eric and Wesley.

Club Night 2/4/2012

From Hasselblad XPan Panoramic Camera to Fuji GX617 panoramic camera, Brett Craig, member of CCC, who got full scores (20) on two images and almost full score (19) on one image last competition night featuring symmetry, humbly shared his evolution of his gears as well as his technicality of panoramic photography. We did enjoy his talk and learned somethng, esp. the composition of panoramic images, which is somewhat different from 4×3 or 3×2 or portrait photos.

Followed Brett’s sharing, Sammy, Alan and Ali shared their digital images and printed images respectively from their perspective, which were also inspiring. At the same time, Wesley passed around collection of his work in a clear folder. He also got a number of admiration from our members.

It was also nice to see our “old” members-Ben and Henrik showing at the night; and Ali presented the trophy of winning the best picture of the exhibition 2011 to Ben.

2012 Tung Ping Chau Excursion

On the 3rd of March, 2012, a group of 14 people, including members, spouses, and friends came along to the within Hong Kong territory but far north east Ping Chau Island (Tung Ping Chau or other name distinguished from Peng Chau Island). The following paragraph is written by Bing, one of our members, who organized this outing:
“We all got up early for this outing and had a wonderful time. Thank you everyone for making this a super outing. The boat ride was a warm up prelude to this island of many interesting things to see. One of the nice things about this island is the limited ferries therefore there were not a lot of people like other outlying islands so it was a photographers paradise. I`m sure many of us will have fond memories of this excursion and one of the most common comment was “This place is an oasis from the hustle and bustle of HK and I will return again.” Like I always say about this place and that is one trip is never enough and I plan on making a camping trip to this place some time in the future. Cheers everyone!”
Although the weather that day was quite cloudy, our members were happy to be able to take their favorite photos. The following nice photos, including those in the gallery of this particular outing are also contributed by Bing:

2012 Vice Chairman’s Christmas Competition

As is our tradition, we hold a special “Vice Chairman’s Christmas Competition” with the theme determined by our Vice Chairman, this year’s Competition will be held on Monday December 3rd. The details have been drafted by Sandy, our vice-chairperson, as below:
“Portrait of an Icon”
Here’s your opportunity to make contact with your favourite idol, hero, celebrity, or a special someone who inspires you. For our End of Year Christmas Competition, we would like to call for submissions of portraits of an icon. The icon represented in the photograph should be a person who has made substantial contribution to a certain field. The icon does not need to be a famous person that everyone knows; it just needs to be a person who has made a significant contribution worthy of praise.
Please also submit a couple of sentences to explain who your icon is and their contribution via email and we’ll print it out to accompany your image. The explanation will also be read out when we review the submissions.
Each person can only submit two images, and we allow prints and digital entries but no slides.
The prize is something super amazing and will be announced in due course.

“Great Competition Evening tonight, at least 28 members, new members and guests plus extra special thanks to our very entertaining, super efficient and insightful Judge Lakshmi Harilela. Good mix of digital and slides, 18 each for Special and Open and a very solid lot of print entries 26 open and 20 special. Congratulations to all the high scorers.”
“We were treated to a ‘how to’ presentation by our wonderful and passionate judge Lakshmi, and many thanks to John Meldrum for helping with the presentation setup, organizing the digital comp entries, taking photos and scoring, to Diane Quick for getting the entries and score sheets ready as well as noting the scores, to Jeff Mein Smith for support on scoring, to Eric TO for taking photos of the night and to Sandy Rie for support and organization during the print competition. Last but not least, a huge thanks to our talented club members and friends who shared their passion for photography with us once again!”

AGM was held at The Studio, 7:30pm 16th, January 2012.

The following highlights was drafted by John, former Chairperson as well as Secretary:
“We welcome Ali Ghorbani as our Nominated Chairman for 2012.

Ali will be ably supported by Sandy Rie as Nominated Vice Chairman.

William has retained the Nominated Treasurer position for a further term, many thanks William for all your past work as Treasurer.

John retains the position of Nominated Secretary but is open to and encourages other members to apply for this position!
It is his fifth year and needs a change!

Nominated Committee Members for 2012 are:
Bernhard G., Bing, Brett Craig., Eric, Lorenza, Wesley and we further nominated Diane and Rick in their absence.

Nominated Workgroup Members were chosen as well but we seek more:
Exhibition: Diane, Jeff, Lorenza and S.H.
Inviting Speakers / Judges: Ali, Jeff, Sandy plus all can assist with this during the year
Social, PR, Annual Dinner: Diane, Irene plus need more!
Website: Eric took over from Mart but anyone else interested to assist is welcome.

Meeting venues were discussed, retain the Studio for Comps but seek free venue for Club Nights if possible.

Club members will be exhibiting a selection of over 60 photographs showing their diverse range of talents and interests at our Annual Exhibition “FRAMED” at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre ground floor foyer from Friday 28th October, 7pm, to Sunday 30th October, 8pm, free entry. Cathay Camera Club was established in 1982 and is Hong Kong’s premier English speaking photography Club. We meet twice a month for competitions, presentations and discussions on all aspects of photography. The Club also organizes photo outings and practical workshops. We welcome visitors and new members from absolute beginners to aspiring professionals.

Switzerland-based Corinne Vionnet is our guide to the world’s most famous landmarks, monuments millions have visited before. Her art is created not by acrylic, oil, or watercolor, each piece is made by combining hundreds of tourist photos into one. After conducting an online keyword search and sifting through photo sharing sites, this Swiss/French artist carefully layers 200 to 300 photos on top of one another until she gets her desired result.

A fascinating story behind an unknown (till now) but very skilled US street photographer Vivian Maier (1926 – 2009) and her tens of thousands of great images – many unseen even by her as undeveloped rolls of film till now. These are now being brought to life by John Maloof here and Jeff Goldstein and collaborators at. The New York Times has a good overview article and further examples of her work. Adam Magyar: Beyond Perspective

Award winning photographer ADAM MAGYAR shows his fascination with urban life in this first solo exhibition in Hong Kong “Beyond Perspective”. His photographs are both surreal and documentary and are best illustrated by ‘Urban Flow’ and ‘Squares’ series he took in Hong Kong where he intentionally distorts perspective to freeze time and motion in an abstract transformation of reality.

‘Stainless’ series contains photos taken by the artist in subway, depicting passengers on a moving train. These works are made possible through a highly sophisticated camera and computer programme invented by the artist himself.

“It is an ever-present human desire to go further and leave some trace behind in the fraction of the time we are given,” says Magyar. “My drive is not different. I aim to grasp the devices at hand, push towards new frontiers by converting already existing technologies for photography in the hope of coming up with something new, a new device, a new language, a new frontier.”

About the artist

Hungarian Adam Magyar is a winner of America’s International Photography Awards (IPA) in 2009 and receiver of Grand Prize at the Hungarian Press Photo Awards in 2004. A photo from his ‘Stainless’ series was auctioned at the Frieze Art Fair last year to raise money for The Prince’s Trust. He was commissioned for projects involving the new Birmingham Library and Stratford Tube Station in UK. His images appear frequently in many photo magazines including Photo Magazine and British Journal of Photography. His works are collected by the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and private collectors in Asia and Europe. He currently lives and works in Germany.

Opening reception is on Tuesday 22 March 2011 from 7 to 9p.m. at the gallery.
The exhibition is on until 18 April 2011.

This Vimeo video of Blind Photographer Pete Eckert has been gaining a lot of attention the past week or so, recommend having a look if you haven’t seen it yet.

From the Artists Wanted website: “Pete was the Grand Prize recipient of Artists Wanted: Exposure 2008, an international photography competition, and was awarded $2,008 with a formal reception at Leo Kesting Gallery in New York City on Thursday August 7, 2008.”
